Resumo: La puesta en valor de los recursos turísticos-culturales presentes en el medio rural se ha convertido en un factor de atracción y diferenciación de los destinos turísticos. En este sentido, la reutilización turística de los antiguos trazados e infraestructuras ferroviarias caracterizadas por su gran valor patrimonial y cultural ha conducido al desarrollo de un turismo sostenible y responsable. El objetivo de este trabajo radica en analizar la contribución del Programa Vías Verdes, creado en 1993 por el entonces Ministerio de Obras Públicas, Transportes y Medio Ambiente de España, como instrumento para la promoción y potenciación de un turismo rural sostenible a través de la revalorización turística del patrimonio histórico-cultural que representa los trazados ferroviarios en desuso. Para ello, se procedió a seleccionar como metodología de investigación el método del caso que permitirá profundizar en la comprensión del objeto de estudio a través del análisis cualitativo de la experiencia turístico-cultural implantada en la denominada “Vía Verde de la Sierra de Cádiz” (Andalucía, España). El resultado de esta investigación sintetiza y describe un conjunto de infraestructuras y recursos turísticos-culturales presente en el citado trazado y cuya puesta en valor ha contribuido al desarrollo de un turismo respetuoso en el medio rural permitiendo servir esta experiencia como marco de referencia para la gestión sostenible de otros recursos patrimoniales.Palabras clave: Vía verde, turismo sostenible, recurso turístico-cultural, Sierra de Cádiz (Andalucía, España).Enhancing a sustainable cultural tourist resource in rural areas: The case of Vías Verdes in SpainABSTRACT The enhancement of the current tourist-cultural resources in rural areas has become a factor to draw interest in and differentiate tourist destinations. Tourist reutilization of former rail lines and railway infrastructures characterized by their great heritage and cultural value has led to the development of sustainable and responsible tourism. The aim of this work is to analyze the contribution of the Vías Verdes Program, created in 1993 by Spain’s then Ministry of Public Works, Transport and the Environment, as an instrument for the promotion and development of sustainable rural tourism through the tourist use of the historical-cultural heritage that unused rail lines represent. To do this, the case study was the research methodology selected, which will provide a more profound understanding of the subject matter through a qualitative analysis of the tourist-cultural experience on the so-called “Vía Verde de la Sierra de Cádiz” rail trail (Andalusia, Spain). The result of this study synthesizes and describes a set of tourist-cultural infrastructures and resources present on the rail line mentioned and the enhancement of which has contributed to the development of a respectful tourism in rural areas, so that this experience can serve as frame of reference for the sustainable management of other heritage resources.Key words: Rail trail, sustainable tourism, tourist-cultural resource, Sierra de Cádiz (Andalusia, Spain).(Presentado: 08 de octubre de 2016.
