Resumo: Since the pandemic declared at the beginning of 2020, the world is experiencing radical changes, whose consequences are severely impacting their modus vivendi. COVID-19, thus called the new wave of global contagion, appears in the XXI century, and has been an infection of rapid transmission among the population everywhere. Nowadays, the world  heritage sites are empty, without local or foreign tourism; with this, new challenges and risks are imposed for historic cities, being that the integrity of the economy, built heritage and cultural heritage in general is threatened. The three main measures adopted by the various local administrations to prevent contagion are “stay at home”, “wash your hands” and “maintain healthy social distance”. The latter is the reason for the present research: it is proposed an analysis of two of Mexico’s world heritage cities (from a total of ten), Queretaro and Guanajuato, orientated at comparing the impact of the pandemic on the cultural heritage and the touristification process of both cities, as well as the possible opportunities offered by social distancing.
