Resumo: Este artigo analisa a evolução do alojamento em Portugal ao longo do século XIX e início do século XX. Tem como objetivo confirmar o diagnóstico produzido pelos atores do turismo sobre o profundo atraso da hotelaria em Portugal, no início do século XX, quando comparada com a Europa. Dada a escassez de fontes, utilizámos preferencialmente guias e literatura de viagens, através das quais procurámos reconstruir imagens e discursos e a realidade do setor hoteleiro. Foi possível concluir que apesar das condições naturais para o desenvolvimento do turismo, não se promoveu uma hotelaria dentro dos padrões europeus que servisse de motor desta atividade económica. PALAVRAS-CHAVETurismo. Hotelaria. História. Portugal. ABSTRACT This article analyzes the evolution of lodging in Portugal throughout the nineteenth century and early twentieth century. It aims to confirm the diagnostic produced by the tourism stakeholders on the deep delay of hotel industry in Portugal, in the early twentieth century, compared to Europe. Being difficult to find the appropriate sources, mainly we used guides, travel and memories literature to rebuild both the discourse and the reality of lodging. In conclusion, despite the natural conditions for the development of tourism, hotel industry didn’t fit European standards and it wasn’t properly promoted to be fully achieved. KEYWORDSTourism.
