Resumo: Tourism has been considered as an alternative activity for rural development promoting activities that also contribute to conserving the natural environment. The present research was carried out in three communities in Tacotalpa Tabasco, including Tapijulapa “Pueblo Magico” (Magical Town). The aim of the research was to find out the effects of alternative tourism on employment. The methodology was both qualitative and quantitative. The results emphasize the benefits and obstacles that local populations face when incorporating into tourism-related activities. The opportunity to take advantage of agriculture, the main activity of the area, is analyzed as a mean to generate more jobs in the area. Alternative tourism creates some opportunities for men and women, although men obtain the greatest benefits. It is concluded that alternative tourism in the area continues to generate inequalities either due to the geographical location of the communities, kinship relations, ethnicity, gender or age.
