Resumo: Tourism in rural areas has proven to be an important catalyst for economic development, as rural properties diversify their activities worldwide. The objective of the article was to analyze subsistence diversifying strategies (Ellis, 2000; Padilha, 2009; Padilha et al., 2020) in rural properties of the rural tourism route Vale Paraíso (Brazil). The methodology involved was a qualitative multi-case research carried out in six companies, through the application of a questionnaire. The responses were recorded and subsequently analyzed using the content analysis technique. As a result, it became evident that among the reasons for exploring rural tourism was the focus on diversity of natural resources, receptivity and income generation There were facilitating and hindering aspects as well as elements that modify access to capital and tourism performance in rural areas. The development of communication skills, an interchange of knowledge with tourists, heightened self-esteem, added value of the product and increased family income were all evident.
