Resumo: Hosting has become a knowledge-intensive activity, and its management is a vital element to achieve the competitiveness of organizations. In this research, a knowledge-based capacity framework has been built for the environmental management of hotels in Oaxaca, Mexico.
This research presents a cross-sectional study carried out in hotel units in Oaxaca, Mexico. For this, a questionnaire was designed and applied to owners or administrators of 130 lodging units; data analysis was performed using a structural equation model by the partial least squares (PLS) method.
The results show that tacit and explicit knowledge is a fundamental resource in the hotel. Knowledge is used by the organization through acquisition, internalization, and transformation capabilities. These capabilities coexist and are related, forming a knowledge circuit for a better environmental performance of the hotel.
This document extends the dynamic capabilities framework to the field of tourism; In order to participate in proactive environmental actions, recognize business efforts and generate alternatives for action to strengthen them, especially the need to seek ways to make explicit the knowledge acquired in elements such as business policies and environmental goals, which can be easily communicated to your customers, suppliers and host communities.
For public policy makers this research is useful as a guide for the development of environmental public policies compatible and close to the specific needs of the sector. And for the general audience it is of interest, as it shows the actions that hotels are implementing in favor of the natural environment.
