Resumo: This research analyzes the current situation of the hotel sector, in Puerto Ayora- Galápagos, from a perspective of sustainability of hotel establishments. For the analysis, the voluntary instruments of sustainable management in favor of conservation applied by hotel establishments were considered. And it was determined the measures adopted by the establishments to be considered sustainable or if they only manage a “greenwashing” marketing to show themselves as sustainable. It is hard to classify Galapagos as a completely sustainable destination, especially in the form of locally based tourism, despite the fact that more and more efforts have been directed towards this objective. Therefore, it is necessary that the management and development of tourism is planned based on the three pillars of sustainability and not only in the search to increase the number of tourists to achieve an economic benefit.
