Resumo: The aim of this article is to study the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the tourist accommodation peer-to-peer (P2P) market at a regional level in Spain. The analysis is based on data compiled by the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) from information provided by digital tourism accommodation platforms. The analysis uses a shift-share approach to decompose the decrease in overnight stays in 2020 relative to 2019 in the different Spanish regions. The results confirm that overnight stays decreased in the first year of the pandemic by almost 60% in the P2P market in Spain, with considerable variation observed between the regions. Likewise, the results show an increase in the proportion of overnight stays by tourists resident in Spain with respect to the total, in keeping with the hypothesis that Spanish tourists are substituting their trips to foreign destinations with domestic travel. On the other hand, the results show no correlation between specialisation and competitive advantage in general; in other words, specialisation in certain source markets has not had an influence on the ability of a region to decrease less in that market than the national average. Nevertheless, Galicia, Cantabria and Madrid have decreased less than the national average in the markets in which they were specialised, and more in those in which they were not specialised.
