Resumo: Tourism sustainability in urban tourism and historic cities is a key issue in the present article. Its purpose is to understand a critical case study of (un)sustainability: The Puy du Fou theme park (PDFE) in Toledo, Spain. The case is analysed from a holistic approach (environmental, touristic and the role of stakeholders) and uses a deductive method. Project and media documentation are used; an empirical survey was conducted among residents asking for their opinion on the opening of the park. PDF generates environmental and tourism unsustainability. PDFE poses a serious environmental risk on local flora and fauna, causes pollution, and has an impact on climate change. It will increase the number of visitors by a third and will create overtourism. Nonetheless, stakeholders strongly support the project, favouring the economic outcomes to the idea of sustainability. Public institutions facilitate the project with urban planning and fiscal licences. Private stakeholders are confident about the promise of increased activity. The local community, despite some opposing minority voices, also openly supports PDFE, as shown by the survey. The findings are of interest because the opening of the theme park PDFE marks an unprecedented milestone unseen in any other historical European city, due to its dimensions and repercussions and here it is academically analysed.
