Resumo: Over the last 20 or 30 years, Spain has been developing an intense relationship between tourism and gastronomy. Andalusia, and the city of Malaga in particular, have positioned themselves as highly attractive territories for all those travelers motivated by gastronomy and culture. In this new scenario, traditional market halls have emerged as a proposal to meet the needs of this new demand, which is also altering their original commercial function and the heritage values that they house. Through a case study of the main traditional market halls in Malaga, a more in-depth knowledge will be gained about their tourist use and the keys to their sustainability will be identified. This sustainability will guarantee the economic viability of the commercial activity and the preservation of the cultural values of the markets while being compatible with the tourist visit. To do this, in addition to characterizing the main markets of the city and their suitability for tourist use, qualitative interviews have been carried out with traders who currently work in the markets in order to learn about their perception of the tourist phenomenon.
