Resumo: The aim of this article is to identify and describe the factors that have led to the touristification of El Tepozteco National Park (TNP) and its effects on the environment, the conflicts between tourism actors and locals, and the actions organised by local communities. The unplanned growth of tourism activities and the massive influx of visitors to TNP have resulted in environmental impacts and conflicts that have generated divisions within the community between the authorities, businesspeople and tourism actors and the local population, who has been excluded from these activities. The study examines the current situation of conflict of interest and lack of trust, credibility and citizen participation. The study also identifies attempts by the local population to organise as a community based on social capital as a way of coexisting with tourism and mitigating its negative impacts. The research uses a descriptive-exploratory case study methodology, including a documentary review of the literature and tourism statistics for Tepoztlán. Data for the study were collected from qualitative and quantitative sources. Owing to the restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, the content analysis is based on texts from websites and social media, and semi-structured interviews with key members of the population conducted using electronic media.
