Resumo: Sport fishing is a recreational and leisure activity of great economic relevance to Baja California Sur (BCS) at international, national, and local levels. It is considered a sustainable activity and one of the pillars for local tourism. The purpose of this work was to determine the profile and characteristics of sports fishermen who visited Isla Cerralvo and its surroundings, as well as their preferences, place of origin, and experience, among others. This will provide valuable information to support the tourist offer of BCS. To this end, 397 surveys were administered to visitors to gather general data, information about their trip, activities carried out by sport fishermen, and economic and regulatory aspects related to sport fishing. A Principal Component Analysis was then carried out for data simplification to reduce the analysis from 21 survey variables to only seven new components or variables. This study revealed that sports fishermen visiting Isla Cerralvo and its surroundings are mainly men, mostly adults (active workers) and senior adults (retired), mostly from the United States of America (USA) and Mexico, with a college degree (bachelor’s degree or above). Visitors report mainly intermediate and beginner fishing skills, stating that sport fishing is a key factor in their decision to visit Isla Cerralvo, and stressing their preference to capture striped and gold marlin. This socio-economic characterization contributes valuable information for the development of strategies aiming to promote Isla Cerralvo and sportfishing in the area, advertise this activity among potential users, and improve the tourism offer, considering the profile and preferences of visitors from the survey.
