Resumo: The challenges of competitiveness and sustainability of traditional destinations demand new and more comprehensive and intelligent management and planning approaches to generate change strategies according to the particular conditions, capacities and limitations of the destination. For that purpose, it is essential to have instruments that allow analyzing the processes through which sustainability becomes effective in the territory, from more systemic positions. In this sense, the objective is to analyze key variables to understand the territorial functionality and the environmental situation of the tourist destination Miramar (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in order to define methodological, practical and transferable criteria for the sustainable management of tourist destinations. To do this, from a qualitative approach, an evaluative descriptive analysis was carried out to diagnose the environmental tourism management model and the four objectives of the Venturini model (2015) aimed at sustainable tourism development were taken as a reference. And, later, a prospective strategic analysis to identify change strategies, based on the structural analysis method (Godet, 2010). The analysis carried out gave the possibility to study the sustainability of tourism management from a model that leads to the incorporation of the environmental dimension in a more efficient way.The operational and analytical criteria selected and applied to the case of Miramar allowed the elaboration of guidelines to understand, identify and select instrumentalaspects adaptable and transferable to the context of coastal urban destinations.
