Resumo: Guided tours in museums are one of the most important strategies to get visitors to their exhibitions. Each institution plans and organizes tours and tour guides. However, there is a lack of methodologies to make the ones responsible for providing visitors with this service more professionally. In this qualitative proposal which is based on ethnographic work, elements that contribute to the improvement of guided tours focused on the guide. The objective is to make visitors live a meaningful experience. The fielwork was done from May 2019 to June 2021 in two museums, a cultural center and an art gallery located in Toluca City: Museo de Arte Moderno, Museo Universitario Leopoldo Flores, Centro Cultural Universitario Casa de las Diligencias and Galería Fernando Cano. The methodology used consisted of guidance and registration of the narrative used by the museum guides, semi-structured interviews for museum guides and visitors and the observation of the visitors’ reactions as well. The result of this investigation is a proposal based on some theory of Umberto Eco, Jan Makarovsky and Pierre Bourdieu which cosnsists of seven elements to bear in mind: start of the tour; contents; narrative structures; guides’ ethics; development of the visit; use and reproduction of the tour; museum guide perspective. These elements aim at confirming the interpretative methodology which allows the development in the educative areas of museums.
