Resumo: The Mexican government has promoted programs to improve the development of indigenous areas through nature tourism; giving rise, to the creation of social enterprises which face adverse situations. This aspect requires the development of business capabilities to counteract the ravages of dynamism of the competitive tourism market. Thus, these companies can have the chance to expand their social capital through relationships with other actors to attract support and knowledge. The research identifies the relationships of indigenous social enterprise dedicated to nature tourism which is located in the Mezquital Valley, an area of Hidalgo State, in Mexico. Moreover, it shows the dysfunctions in the processes of transmission of knowledge which are focused on capabilities development. For this, we employ the systems approach and the soft systems methodology. This perspective allows us a holistic approach to propose a conceptual model for the desirable functioning of the system. The findings show the lack of coordination between the actors, the little interest in capabilities development, and the almost null collaboration between peers. These issues lead us to define the root cause and the desirable and feasible changes are determined. We conclude that the soft systems methodology is a tool that allows breaking down the complexity of indigenous social capital and allows identifying aspects of improvement on the analyzed aspects.
