Resumo: Interest in regenerative tourism is growing in response to the current environmental crisis, and driving changes to the traditional model of tourism. The main aim of this research is to understand what regeneration is and how it can be implemented in tourism planning. The study consisted of a bibliographical review of the main concepts related to regeneration and regenerative tourism, analysing its evolution and the changes it represents for tourism planning. Different models of regenerative tourism were explored in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the relationship between sustainability and regeneration in the context of tourism, and, finally, a comparative analysis of regional destination management plans in New Zealand was carried out to examine the implementation of regenerative tourism principles in tourism planning in this pioneering country. The conclusions identify a series of specific criteria for the development of regenerative tourism based on an understanding of tourism as a living, interconnected system driven by authentic, beneficial relationships for all.
