Resumo: The objective of this work was to present the tourist routes that Tabasco offers and raise the potential of protected natural areas and other natural spaces to strengthen and promote tourism in the entity. Mexico has great cultural and gastronomic wealth and is one of the countries with the greatest biodiversity in the world. Tabasco is not only the gateway to the Mexican southeast, but also to the Mayan world. Vestiges of the Olmec and Mayan civilizations are found in archaeological zones and state museums, housing original pieces from both cultures. The entity has great tourist potential due to its attractive natural and cultural characteristics. Its rainy tropical climate and warm temperatures allow the development of an exuberant and varied flora and fauna. Its geography, water resources and climate are essential for the presence of large wetlands, jungles, mountains, savannahs and beaches where there are landscapes of great scenic beauty. The 18 natural protected areas of the state and other natural spaces are places with landscapes of high visual impact of great value as a tourist resource and have great potential to develop alternative tourism in any of its three main segments: adventure tourism, ecotourism and rural tourism. Alternative tourism is an option that increases the tourism potential of protected areas within a framework of respect for the natural, historical and cultural heritage that allows the sustainable use of natural resources and provides economic and social well-being to the resident populations without losing their identity.
