Resumo: RESUMO Este trabalho se insere no incipiente campo da história do turismo no Brasil, indagando em suas antecipações no século XIX, ou seja, nas práticas e representações que, em boa medida, o fundamentaram, ainda durante o século XX. Eis a principal idéia que nos fez revisitar os oitocentos desde uma perspectiva diferente na qual o turismo constitui o centro da reflexão. Partindo desse pressuposto e da sua natureza – uma construção social – foco minha leitura da história do Brasil a partir da chegada da Família Imperial até o último quartel do século XIX. Nessa etapa pensei a ocidentalização e reprodução de aspirações, particularizando, nos hábitos e costumes trazidos pelos Bragança ao Brasil. De particular interesse resultaram as práticas terapêuticas da época e os banhos de mar. Detenho-me também em guias de viagens da época, na construção da natureza recreativa, do ócio e do lazer entorno de elementos naturais da geografia carioca, assim como na viagem turística dos norte-americanos ao Rio de Janeiro. Esses aspectos tornam complexo o estudo histórico do turismo em uma etapa prévia a sua organização, estruturação e inserção na pauta do poder público o que entra em contradição com interpretações presentes no meio acadêmico brasileiro. A contribuição teórica deste artigo, que se inspira e dialoga com os estudos de Marc Boyer e de Haroldo L. Camargo, aponta para uma proposta de estudo do turismo relacionada à História do Brasil. Palavras-Chave: turismo, antecipações, história, viagem moderna, Brasil ABSTRACT This work fits with the nascent field of history of tourism in Brazil, asking in its anticipation in the nineteenth century, ie, practices and representations that conform part of its foundations, even during the twentieth century. This is the main idea that made us revisit the eight hundred from a different perspective in which tourism is the center of reflection. Based on this assumption and its nature - a social construction - revisit the history of Brazil from the arrival of the imperial family until about the last quarter of the nineteenth century. At this stage I thought westernization and playing aspirations, specifying, habits and customs brought by Braganza. Of particular interest resulted in the therapeutic practices of the time and characteristics of sea bathing. I dwell also on the characteristics of the journey and his writing in the last decades of the century, the construction of recreational, leisure and recreation of the surrounding natural elements of the geography of Rio as well as the tourist visit the U.S. to Rio de Janeiro. These aspects complicate the historical study of tourism in a step prior to its organization, structure and inclusion in the agenda of the government which contradicts with interpretations present in the brazilian academic studies on tourism. The theoretical contribution of this article, points to a proposed study of tourism related to the history of Brazil. Keywords: tourism, anticipations, history, modern travel, Brazil
