Resumo: The aim of this paper is to present a successful case of community-based ecotourism in a Mayan community and some of its strengths, achievements and obstacles. Kantemo Mayan community, located in southeastern Mexico, decided 8 years ago to seek an alternative product through tourism in order to exploit the rich landscape and natural resources that it possesses. Now it provides trail tours, canoeing on the lake, camping, bird watching and hanging snakes show that has given a particular and exclusive label to this project. Its particular form of tourism and the excellent performance of its organization are its main strengths, whilst both marginal domestic and international distribution of the product and tourist services as well as the ongoing internal struggle for leadership are its main weaknesses. The main challenges are to increase public, private and social support, and to increase the number of tourists and keep jobs and income.
