Resumo: In a context of growing competition among tourism destinations, it becomes very important to identify the reasons why tourists choose to visit some destinations instead of others. The empirical study presented in this paper analyses the role that the visitors’ motivations play in the decision to visit some protected areas. The research focus on two protected areas located in Portugal – the Peneda-Gerês National Park and the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The study shows that motivations had an important influence in the decision to visit the protected areas instead of other destinations and reveal that the motivations for visiting different protected areas can be considerably different.
