Resumo: This article reflects upon the actual situation of rural tourism, specifically in Portugal, but also referring to the phenomenon and its research at an international scale. After a brief conceptualization of this type of tourism and presenting a framework regarding the transformations of the rural world, we will analyse in further detail the profile and possible evolution of its market, apparent opportunities and constraints to overcome so as to permit the realization of a rural tourism beneficial to all involved and potentially contributing to a sustainable development of the rural territories at stake. Research on this topic has significantly contributed to a better understanding of the phenomenon of rural tourism and its dynamics as well as to the development of strategies yielding both market increased and sustainable rural tourism businesses and destinations.
