Resumo: The need to adopt and implement a comprehensive “Road Map for Accessible Tourism” in the European context is timely and significant. The inadequate and inconsistent policies towards tourism services and facilities across European Union member states for disabled travelers can be a source of considerable annoyance and inconvenience, distortion and less protection. An “Accessible Tourism” policy needs to be developed in order to face the increasing global competition in terms of price and quality; to anticipate and meet the demands, of the demographic ageing of western industrial countries; and to strengthen the rights of persons with disabilities.A “Road Map for Accessible Tourism Policy” in Europe is designed for the development of policies and dissemination of best practices in all countries. It sketches a plan that is coherent, with short-term actions within a framework of a long-term strategy to strengthen coordination and planning, raise awareness and shape public opinion, and engage the tourism sector more.
