Resumo: This paper aims to analyze the main cooperation actions and reasons for cooperating among micro and small tourism businesses situated on Costa Norte, coastal zone formed by municipalities of three north eastern Brazilian counties. The research methods were organized in two stages. The first represents a qualitative approach based on 53 semistructured interviews. The second consists on a survey, based on structured questionnaires, which was undertaken with 213 micro and small tourism businesses. The results suggest that recommendation of local businesses and partnerships with the Rota das Emoções project are more frequent than any other cooperative actions. Moreover, the main reasons for cooperating are the improvement of services and increase of tourist attraction. On the other hand cost reduction and self fulfilment are the less important reasons. In conclusion, the research suggests the incorporation of some cooperative actions may be linked to the core business of each sector. At last, destination life cycle is apparently linked with reasons alleged for cooperation.
