Resumo: This study compared the relationship between organizational environment, strategic behaviour and performance in travel agencies located in Florianopolis (Santa Catarina/SC) – Brazil, from the perception of their managers. A quantitative approach, based on a survey research strategy, using multivariate exploratory methods was used. As environment analysis dimensions, the model of complex-simple or static-dynamic by Duncan (1972) was applied, deriving from the number of factors (frequency) and their degree of variation (intensity). To typify behaviour, the theory of Miles and Snow (1978) was also used. The complex-dynamic environment was the most perceived by managers, as well as the frequency of factor such “legislation” and “technology” and the intensity changes of the factor “economics”. The control variable “level of education” was associated with the intensity of the changes, and the variable “age” with the frequency of the changes. Predominantly, managers of travel agencies adopt prospector and defensive behaviours, although older managers adopt analytical behaviours. Those who perceived high frequency of changes tend to adopt defensive behaviours and the performance is related to the reactive behaviour. The relevance of this work consists in bringing new evidences to the understanding of how organizations interpret the environment and behave in their sectors of economic activity.
