Resumo: S. João da Madeira is known as the “city of work,” thanks to its rich history linked to footwears, hats and famous companies such as Oliva and Viarco. It has the industrial archeology existing throughout the municipality, combined with its traditional industrial activities. In this article, a case study was elaborated, with the aim of demonstrating how the existing industrial diversity has taken advantage of transforming an emerging territory as a national reference for industrial tourism, through the design of industrial tourism circuits. Sustainable management maintains the balance between the social, environmental and economic dimensions. In our opinion, the manufacturing process is the main asset that can be offered to the tourist. It is necessary to implement a municipal strategy for tourism with the participation of all stakeholders interested in the project, promoting networking and building partnerships.
