Resumo: The growing number of destinations in the global tourism marketplace has placed considerable emphasis on the notion of destination competitiveness. While, competitiveness has often been viewed in economic terms, the issue of sustainability has highlighted the fact that market share cannot be pursued at the expense of the environmental and social resources of the destination. One such planning approach to overcome these issues is strategic visioning. By adopting a strategic visioning approach to oturim planning it is proposed that a destination's competitiveness can be enhanced due to the processes' integration of sustainable development principles; the emphasis on the future; the requirement for collaboration between destination stakeholders; and the flexibility the process provides for changing environmental conditions.
