Resumo: The study of the state of the art of research in Tourism and tourism related areas in Brazil is important to reflect on future directions research. Master degree programs, and the resulting dissertations, produce contents that are available for other studies to be conducted, considering the bibliographical references of the concluded dissertations of four postgraduate courses in the period 2000 to 2006. Tools, techniques and bibliometrics and scientometrics methods from the Information Science research area enable to conduct this research, clarifying some issues, namely the total number of dissertations produced in this period of time; the research lines of the Master degree programs that have influenced the development of the state of the art of the research area; the thematic categories of dissertations; and the current state of the art of tourism research in Brazil in terms of the direction of development of scientific knowledge.
