Resumo: This study aims to investigate the importance of business ethics for hotels of São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil, regarding to the achievement of environmental sustainability. The specific objectives are: to develop a conceptual study about environmental sustainability, environmental management system and ethics, to collect data of hotels placed on Sao Luis coast, in order to investigate their concerns about sustainable practices, to suggest actions to encourage the managers’ ethical behavior regarding to the implementation of sustainable actions. The study is qualitative, exploratory and descriptive (Richardson, 1999). The theoretical framework was developed upon the concept of tourism, environmental sustainability, economics and philosophy. Findings revealed a problematic reality within the hotels and the environment, identifying different priorities among the managers investigated for the development of sustainable actions. It was found that the hotels must improve their sustainable concerns, in order to improve their whole as social agents.
