Resumo: This paper aims to describe the scenario of economic studies of tourism in Brazil, revealing its historical evolution, the most frequent topics and the level of methodological development of the area. A relatively large body of research was developed since the last years of the 1980s. Some of the main subjects researched are the economic measurement of tourism in Brazil, the economic impacts of changes this activity, economic and regional development, tourism demand and air transport economics.The paper also identified the main researchers and demonstrated the methodological improvement of the research field. Finally, the paper identified gaps and opportunities for future research.
