Resumo: This study presents an analysis of the situation of the Bachelor of Tourism program at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) in the city of Currais Novos, a city that belongs tothe Seridó Potiguar region. This program is the result of a macro regional development policy, both in regard to tourism as well as education, which is confronting the daily limitations that, in practice, go beyond the political process, as it has been theoretically conceived, designed, and implemented. In order to do so, this study has collected data on teaching in the referred to program, identified the research and extension projects that permeate the program and pointed out the difficulties of higher education as they are experienced in regional tourism. Data has been collected from official documents, as well as research conducted by the [Structuring Education Center] of the program, Lattes database, database of the academic system, and is also based on the experience and observations of the participating authors. The results of the analysis suggest that in spite of counting on increasingly developing research and extension projects, the program has been unable to keep students and tourism professors in the countryside and both the distance and poor travelling conditions are affecting education, especially tourism.
