Resumo: Commonly, Social Tourism has not been a topic of main interest in research about tourism. Recently though, it has been attracting the interest of researchers from several countries who are concerned about certain aspects of tourism that are not often brought up when discussing conventional tourism, such as inclusion, accessibility and solidarity, to mention some. This is why we are currently observing a re-evaluation of this theme in the academic environment. Such concern becomes even moreimportant given the new economical and geopolitical situations that are affecting countries with tradition in this field, as well as those that only have had occasional initiatives. Based on this, there is a bibliographic research, official publications, and consultations with organizations and professionals involvedin the everyday practice of this form of tourism that provides a reflection on the most recent studies about social tourism. In addition, there is the mention of three Brazilian experiences and practices that illustrate the importance of viable tourism alternatives to segments of the population that otherwise, would probably remain priced out of this form of leisure. Finally, there is a discussion on challenges and prospects for the advancement of social tourism through practice and research of social tourism in Brazil, as well as a potential coordination with the international scene.
