Resumo: Sustainable development has been 'overabused' since the 1987 Brundtland report, a study which interestingly does not consider tourism in the context of sustainability. The islands are ecosystems that deserve special attention because of their sensitive nature. Tourism on islands in as option for development, is in the interest of various stakeholders and serves as fertile ground for theoretical and applied research. Sustainability without competitiveness is empty and competiviveness without sustainability is blind. This agenda is particularly relevant for the Portuguese continent and the autonomous regiond of Madeira and Azores as tourist destinations. It is necessary to consider the interests of residents and 'other public'.
