Resumo: Tourism is increasingly a phenomenon that generates wealth, as well as a critical vehicle for the economic development of a region. Presently, this sector represents, in the Portuguese economy, the biggest income source, as our country is visited by a big flow of tourists, who visit us driven by countless motivations. Based on these facts, we will try to put forward in this paper the most striking features of a research project which aim was to verify to what extent the animation and leisure activities, developed in the city of Guimarães — a city that has always been a cultural reference to us and that presently, classified by UNESCO as World Heritage, is a candidate to the 2012 European Capital of Culture — influence the choice of this tourist destination.
