Resumo: Over the last fifteen years, Hull has been the subject of urban regeneration and tourism development policies that seek to transform itself into an important leisure, tourism and retail centre, following models and broader developments present in several other English cities. The paper aims to analyse and evaluate the results of these policies – creation and remodeling of spaces, buildings and tourist attractions and reorientation of the local council –, considering the objective of transforming Hull into an important tourist destination, retail centre and harbour of service companies. The research methodology included a literature review, a documentary research, interviews and a photographic survey. Besides Hull, fifteen other English cities were visited in the field research, allowing a comparative analysis. Given the absence of unique elements and attractions, the image of being a tedious place with nothing to do and the crescent competitiveness of the market, which have invested in urban regeneration and tourism promotion, places like Hull have increasing difficulty in achieving their goals.
