Resumo: The purpose of this article is to contribute to a discussion regarding an agenda of scientific research of Portuguese tourism. Given that without scientific knowledge there is no economic or social progress, this article attempts to explain the foundations of a scientific study in tourism and defends the methods as well as the need for a multidisciplinary approach in reaching the best solutions to the tourism problems. On analysing the existing scientific studies an the importance of tourism in the Portuguese economy, this article concludes that there is a need for Portugal to have a national tourism agenda. In preparing this agenda the needs must be identified through the cooperation and collaboration between of the public sector, industry and the scientific community.
