Resumo: The present study aims to study the motor caravanning in Portugal. This is a touristic modality that despite being in expansion in several European countries is commonly undervalued by tourism (both public and private) organizations in Portugal. From the point of view of scientific research this also constitutes an unexplored subject. The success of the tourism offer in attracting and retaining tourists depends on its ability in responding to the needs and desires of the target market. This study intends to increase the knowledge on the profile of motor caravanning practitioners, as well to contribute to the design of future strategic actions aimed at promoting and hosting the motor caravanning activity. To achieve this objective a survey was applied to a sample of 271 Portuguese motor caravanning practitioners, which constitutes the empirical basis of this study. Results allowed a deeper understanding about the perceived importance that different factors have in the decision making process associated with choosing a destination and identifying motor caravanning underlying reasons. The behaviour of motor caravanning practitioners regarding the destination was also analysed. Results also show the relevance that these factors may have on future political development of this modality, based on the principles of sustainability and competitiveness of tourism destinations.
