Resumo: The purpose of this paper is to analyse the adoption of Environmental Management Practices (EMP) by hotels, studying the particular case of Portuguese hotels. In order to achieve this objective a questionnaire was e-mailed, in 2010, to all the mainland Portuguese hotel managers to obtain information about the EMP implemented by their hotels. Tests of association (Chi-square) and tests of differences between groups (t-test) were conducted in order to analyse the existence of statistically significant differences in terms of number of EMP adopted by the hotels and type of EMP implemented, according to the existence of a formal environmental policy and the existence of an environmental certification. The results suggest that the majority of Portuguese hotels implement EMP but only about 40% adopt a written environmental policy and 19% have an environmental certification. The findings also show that the adoption of environmental practices is improved by the existence of formal environmental policies and by the existence of an environmental certification in hotels
