Resumo: This article is about the conclusion work of the course “Analysis of the inclusion of the informal native tour guides in the tourism development of the Ilha dos Marinheiros, Rio Grande/RS, Brazil”, done in 2009, and that aimed to diagnose if the informal tourism guides of this island participate in the tourism development process. The sections of this paper are the following: theoretical framework about tourism planning, need for planning, and the importance of local community; context of the Ilha dos Marinheiros; methodology and results presentation. The means used to data collection were interviews to informal tourism guides, agents for inbound tourism, a Tour Guides Association of Rio Grande representative and the Secretary of Tourism. Through the interviews it is concluded that the informal tour guides are not involved in tourism process, with the main reasons being: the difficult access to these informal tour guides and the limited availability of them to work in the tourism area, because they need to work in other economic activities. Thus, some interventions have been proposed: meetings between the tourism agencies and the informal tour guides, tourism awareness project with the islanders and projects that aim to reconcile tourism with other economic activities.
