Resumo: The complexity and diversity of tourism in rural areas encourage and induce the interest of researches from different fields of study. This brings about a vast and heterogeneous scientific production associated to it, and, hence, studies and debates, enhancement and development. The interest is also manifested by government agencies and private organizations which are responsible for systematically arranging discussion forums characterized by the presence and participation of several groups linked, direct or indirectly, to rural tourism. Thus, distinctive concepts are shared and discussed, promoting partnerships, and contributing to an important improvement of the understandings related to rural  tourism. Therefore, this paper aims to show connections between scientific knowledge and rural tourism development in Brazil (1984-2012) based on the study of technical, business and scientific conferences themes, and official guidelines for the segment. It has been observed as a result that the number and frequency of the conferences to discuss the issue is a key indicator of different stakeholder’s commitment to rural tourism in Brazil. This paper also highlights the permanent partnership between researchers, tourism business owners, associations and the government for knowledge production and dissemination. During this period, the segment overcame implementation barriers, improved its problem solving skills, and is currently concerned about transformations caused by its own development.
