Resumo: Events have been assumed as an integral part of the economic and cultural strategies of the regions, making them a tool in the differentiation and development of destinations. Tourism on the Island of Madeira is an essential pillar of economy of the region. Madeira wine has long been one of the main drives of the regional economy, providing employment for many winegrowers and producers. This article proposes to analyse the potential of cultural events for local development and aims to understand if these events contributes to the valorisation of local products, using as a case study the Madeira Wine Festival. This research study was based on a qualitative methodology, with the application of twenty interviews to public and private entities, as well as local associations with a decisive role in the development of tourism and realization of cultural events. The research findings show that the Madeira Wine Festival is an effective tool for the promotion and enhancement of local products. The organization of this event boosts not only the local economy, but also the development of tourism in the destination, so it is possible to afirm that cultural events are promoters of local development.
