Resumo: Tourism is an industry with an undeniable relevance, influencing the development in a big way and creating wealth in destinations. The role and support of the public setor as a main driver for the development of tourism is evident, mainly in what concerns to investment issues. Tourism planning has a great importance in this context, with particular attention on the definition of policies at the local level. Without them, it would be difficult to create the necessary conditions for the growth and development of the tourism sector and to increase the attraction and maintenance of visitors on the destinations. This article focuses on the Northern Region of Portugal, and presents the main dynamics of tourism investment by the public sector, between 2007 and 2013, under the Regional Operational Program of North (ON.2). The main findings related to public investment in tourism in this region are based on the division of this territory in their 4 promotional touristic destinations (Minho, Tras-os-Montes, Porto and Douro), in order to identify similarities and/ or differences between them.
