Resumo: The current role of universities in society is discussed in order to set the scene in which is found the tourism research. The importance attached to scientific production is highlighted in this context. Subsequently, a debate on the internationalization of Brazilian universities is presented and challenges and opportunities for the internationalization of Brazilian research in tourism are discussed. It follows with the description of the methodology adopted for the empirical study and the discussion of the results obtained. It was found that Brazilian tourism research is still little known by members of the international academic community, especially by those who are part of the dominant linguistic group. It was also observed that tourism research in Brazil is seen as having low quality by this group and by the Portuguese-speaking foreign scholars. On the other hand, the Spanish-speaking scholars have, in general, a more positive perception about Brazilian research and researchers in the area. It is expected that Brazilian academics feel encouraged by this article to seek the internationalization of their scientific production and, possibly, of their career.
