Resumo: Despite the number of persons travelling for education, research and reliable data on educational tourism are scarce. This is particularly true regarding international higher education students’ market which is a distinct and expanding segment of the tourism sector. This paper describes the separate nature of higher education tourism market, its current global size, international education mobility patterns – identifying worldwide leading destinations and generating countries – and trends.Special attention is given to international organized student mobility occurring in the framework of the ERASMUS and to thePortuguese participation in this Programme. Data show that Portugal is one of the few countries that have generated a growing number of students, and that nowadays plays a very important role as both generator and host country. Details are provided about the evolution of the Portuguese students and about the current flows of Erasmus students between Portugal and other countries alongside with comparisons between the participation of Portugal and other countries in the ERASMUS.
