Resumo: Public sector has a remarkable importance in the tourism sector, and the intervention of public authorities is essential at all levels (national, regional and local). This hierarchy does not have strict boundaries, where all scales must be interconnected, to ensure the proper functioning of the tourism activity in destinations. There are various functions performed by the public sector, and it is possible to highlight issues related to planning, regulation and legislation, education and training, promotion and coordination. Public sector investment is an issue that deserves particular attention in this investigation. Public policies are defined in order to make effective tourism planning and to avoid conflicts and negative impacts associated to this industry. This paper aims to understand the role and importance of the public sector in tourism, with a special focus on public policies and its methods for monitoring and evaluating them.
