Resumo: This research addresses the processes and forms of women’s participation in two types of tourism businesses: private enterprises and community-based enterprises. The aim is, first, to determine the level of gender empowerment reached between the private and community businesses, and on the other hand, see if that level of empowerment is related to the type of company. The research hypothesis is that the organizational structure of the business influences the process of empowerment of women participating in it. Mixed methods were employed: surveys, interviews and observation. The results of this research indicate that women who belong to community-based enterprises have succeeded in achieving a greater level of empowerment than women involved in business with a private pattern.
