Resumo: From the 19th century, intellectuals and artists arrived at many points of the Mediterranean, and Ibiza was no exception. This paper is a case study that delves into the changes and cultural continuities caused by their presence, and the importance they have had for the formation of the image and tourist supply of Ibiza. The first important arrivals were in the thirties of the 20th century, continuing in the fifties and following. The community of artists and intellectuals attracted the countercultures of them (beatniks and hippies), as happened in other parts of the world. But the uniqueness of Ibiza is due to the efforts of local and national authorities to promote the island based on the counterculture. The media impact of hippies in the sixties and seventies was very strong, linking the island to this movement since then. In addition, various elements linked to the intellectuals (art galleries and exhibitions) and the counterculture (handicraft markets and Adlib fashion) have become an important part of the tourist supply. Therefore, the art and crafts created by the foreign community, and promoted by the administrations, has become an element of the local culture and the differentiation of Ibiza as a tourist destination.
