Resumo: Tourism receiving communities are vulnerable to economic, social and environmental impacts from the insertion of the activity in their territories. This imbalance questions whether this sector ensures and accredits growth and development commensurate with social welfare and towards a true sustainable development, as presented in the speech. The work is based on a qualitative methodology of critical and phenomenological approach that identifies the socio-environmental vulnerability of Holbox, Quintana Roo, and its areas of influence, based on the participation of social actors from the community as main catalysts. For this, two analyzes are presented: a) one by economic, social and environmental impacts; and b) sustainable communal attributes derived from structures that are alternatives to the neoliberal model, such as human development, communality, the economy of work, the new rurality and good living. The findings turn towards an accelerated development of tourist activity that favors a gap of inequality between the economic spill, the loss and weakening of communal attributes and impacts on the environment. Identifying this vulnerability from the social perspective, allows the community itself to recognize the challenges to face in order to stop inequality, which means an alternative way of empowering the tourism receiving communities and lead them to reinvent tourist destinations in line with sustainable development
