Resumo: The growth of migration and tourism are two of the most significant trends of globalization. Both phenomena involve the movement of people, however there is currently little research on this relationship. Mexico ranks second in attracting international remittances, result of its migrants in the United States. The links generated by migration are related to tourism. The objective of this research is to identifie what is the contribution of remittances generated by the Mexican migrants on the domestic tourism mexican economy. Using data from the Income and Expenditure Household National Survey, we could identifie remittances and tourism expenditure on accommodation and packages and touristic transport, which together form the Domestic Tourism Consumption (CTIn). With these data and in order to answer the research question; a selectivity model is used assuming that tourism is a luxury good and that households self-select for touristic consumption. Households that make tourism consumption are statistically different from those households that make tourism consumption but also receive remittances, so it is important to analyze the differentiating effect of remittances. The model allowed us to identify that for every dollar that comes from international remittances, 6% is spent in domestic tourism; this is equivalent to 1.296 billion dollars annually. Undoubtedly, the effect of remittances sent by migrants mainly from the United States, lead to increase domestic tourism consumption within Mexico. This indicates that households at the time that one of its members is in another country, the household will be willing to travel i.e. to do some tourism activities either transportation, lodging or food and beverage, as a result of an influence which is created through the experiences that the migrant transmits. Therefore it is necessary public policies to attend this sector, because at the same time they are a low-income sector.
