Resumo: This article examines, from the framework of sustainable development, the relevant role of culture, cultural and natural heritage, as a contribution to the development of social sustainability in Mexico. Essentially it stands out as these elements constitute triggers in the promotion and protection of the elements of culture, the ecological heritage and the social values of the communities. This makes it possible to offer a wide range of tourism services of a cultural nature that offer a significant economic spill erected in the public policies that are established in guidelines to avoid the negative effects, privileging the balance between economic development and the safeguarding of cultural resources and natural. In the final considerations it is argued that the cultural and natural heritage in Mexico can not be conceived as mere sumptuous objects of consumption, but they constitute icons that link us to our past.
