Resumo: In the last decades, rivers have become increasingly important from the point of view of their social, cultural value and as a tourist resource. This relevance is even more evident in rural areas where rivers have retained unique natural features that interweave with the cultural landscape and daily life of riparian inhabitants. The objective of the research was to know the conditions and potentialities offered by the Magdalena river in the municipality of Suárez-Tolima to promote river tourism in the region of the high Magdalena department of Tolima, this was done through the use of four techniques for the Information survey: field observation, interview and oral communication, survey and group techniques, in addition to the above a characterization of the tourist attractions of the municipality was carried out and an evaluation of the variables that integrate the tourism product to determine if the Municipality of Suárez-Tolima was a potential destination, emerging or consolidated. In this context, tourism’s territorial planning and the theoretical approach to tourism valorization were analyzed as a way of conducting research, analyzing tourism as a complex social phenomenon and as a means to provide job opportunities and quality of life the habitants living on the banks of the Magdalena River (Colombia).
